How to help older people cope with anxiety during wartime

  • Keep in constant contact, regardless of whether you live in the same city or in different ones. You should call elderly family members in the morning and in the evening, without showing your own anxiety and fears. You should be confident and calm during conversations. Pass the phone to the children and grandchildren – let them cheer up the old ladies.
  • Speak a plan of all possible situations so that you are ready for everything. Develop and discuss the plan as specifically as possible. Such consistency and clarity will calm the elderly.
  • Take care of the health of your elderly relatives. Ask if they have all their medication, how they are doing, etc. If the first aid kit needs to be replenished, especially when it comes to medications for chronic conditions, help them with this.
  • Discuss how much, where, and what news to watch and listen to. Explain that much of the information currently available is provocative and false, and therefore potentially harmful. Together, choose one or more media that you trust and make sure that your relatives do not become victims of fakes.
  • Hug more often. It is simply impossible to overestimate the importance of touch, and now they are needed more than ever.
  • Do not forget about the elderly people who are close to you: neighbors, colleagues, just a grandmother on the street. Help lonely old women if you have such an opportunity.
