How to improve memory without drugs: three simple exercises

Ability to “record” information in his memory sometimes lets us down. To prevent this from happening, you need to train your ability to remember.

A neurobiologist, professor of psychology at the University of Miami Amisha Jha named exercises to improve memory, which can have a qualitative effect on it and help the brain retain memories longer.

The expert emphasized that we often think of what is a problem of attention as a memory problem. She singled out three daily habits that will help improve memory.

1. Rehearsal

Use your attention to track and remember the information you need – the name of a new colleague who was just recommended, the most important facts about the on-the-job training you are taking, details of an interesting experience you recently had, etc.

2. Processing

Processing involves using attention to connect new experiences or information with knowledge or memories you already have. This way, you can remember a lot more, Ja explained.

The neuroscientist gave the following example:

“Imagine an octopus. And now I will tell you: an octopus has three hearts. If you didn't already know this, then when you hear it, you attach the new knowledge to your existing image of an octopus. The next time you see an octopus, you will suddenly remember this fact”

3. Consolidation

Memory consolidation is the transfer of short-term memories into long-term ones. To increase the chances of long-term memorization, you need to repeat what you want to remember. It is advisable to do this for 40 seconds.

Memory consolidation occurs during rest. That is why, for example, it is so important to get a good night's sleep the night before the exam.

The neurobiologist also points out that memory consolidation can be supported by so-called idle time – time without tasks for mental activity.

“Have you ever had a great idea in your head? And it didn't happen because you were inspired by the smell of shampoo. The point is that the shower forced the brain to rest. You couldn't take a phone or a computer there. You were trapped in this little wet box where nothing demanded your attention,” she gave an example.
