Physical activity brings great health benefits and is also one of the main keys to longevity. The main benefit of exercise is that it strengthens the heart and helps maintain a healthy weight. Scientists found out how much you need to do sports per week in order to live longer.
For this, experts used the concept of “metabolic equivalent of the task” (MET) – this is the ratio of the level of a person's metabolism during physical activity to the level of his metabolism at rest.
UK experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week for optimal cardiovascular health, which is about 500 MET minutes per week.
Aerobic exercises that can increase life expectancy include:
- brisk walking;
- cycling;
- dancing;
- water aerobics.
In addition to the listed moderate-intensity aerobic activity, it is recommended to perform high-intensity exercises for at least 75 minutes per week. This includes:
- jogging;
- fast swimming;
- fast cycling or steeplechase;
- walking on the stairs.
