How to plant and grow rosemary in a pot

Rosemary is an evergreen perennial plant found in all Mediterranean countries and Asia Minor. It is a slow-growing shrub with narrow, hard leaves resembling conifers. It reaches 1.5-2 meters in height. If you rub a sprig of rosemary, the air is filled with a pleasant balsamic aroma.

The rosemary bush blooms from April to June. Its flowers are small and pale blue, and are very attractive to bees.

Although it is a Mediterranean shrub, rosemary is well known in many countries. It grows mainly on the Black Sea coast and is widely used in folk medicine. Rosemary is most often used to treat headaches and nervous disorders, it improves memory and brain function.

Rosemary is also used in cooking. It is added to fish dishes, game, and is used to season meat in the oven.

Since this heat-loving plant cannot withstand low temperatures, rosemary is mainly grown in pots. The ideal place for a box with rosemary is a southern balcony that is well protected from the wind. It is recommended to propagate it with cuttings taken in August, because growing seedlings from seeds is very difficult.

To do this, you will need an old rosemary plant. Cut its branches, clean the leaves at the bottom and plant them directly in boxes with light soil – clay-sandy. Another option is to put them in water and then plant them.

While they are taking root, the plant is very sensitive to water, so watering should be done every day. When the cuttings take root, they can be planted in soil with a very high content of gravel and coarse sand.

The best place to grow rosemary are boxes or pots, which should be kept at home in the winter in a frost-free, bright and ventilated place. The plant can withstand temperatures down to minus 5°C. It is taken out again after there is no longer even the slightest danger of frost.

Rosemary does not require too frequent watering. In winter, rosemary is watered when the soil is completely dry, and in summer – a little every day or every other day. Dry soil and air do not harm it. Heat only intensifies its aroma.
