To protect the heart from arterial hypertension and other diseases, you need to avoid passive smoking.
Scientists from South Korea came to this conclusion after a study, the results of which were presented at the scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
“Avoid exposure to passive smoking regardless of whether the smoker is in the room,” said scientist Bang Jin Kim.
More than 130,000 people with an average age of 35 participated in the study. The aim was to study the link between passive smoking and hypertension. As scientists found, passive smoking at home or at work increases the risk of developing hypertension by 13%. Living in the same room with a smoker for 20 years increases the risk by 15%.
People with hypertension were significantly more likely to be exposed to passive smoking at home or at work (27.9%) than those with normal blood pressure (22.6%).
“The results suggest that it is necessary to completely avoid passive smoking, rather than simply reduce exposure, to protect against hypertension,” Kim added.
