Dementia leads to permanent decrease in cognitive functions of the brain, which significantly worsens the quality of life. Scientific studies show that the development of this condition can be prevented if preventive measures are taken. A proper sleep regimen can reduce the risk of dementia.
American scientists studied the data obtained from 2,610 participants in the National Health and Aging Trends study and came to the conclusion: lack of sleep directly associated with the risk of developing dementia.
Study participants, whose average age was 76, were asked to answer a series of questions about the quality and quantity of sleep, including the reasons for its disruption, including increased anxiety and snoring.
Analysis of the received information showed that with less than five hours of sleep per day, the risk of dementia doubles. The probability of death in the next four to five years also increases, said Dr. Charles Cheisler, an expert on sleep disorders and circadian rhythms.
The doctor emphasized that the results of the study confirm the importance of healthy sleep for maintaining full-fledged brain functions. and also indicate the importance of finding new ways to improve sleep quality.
