1
In the fall, you can do something useful for yourself in the garden and sow cabbage. You need to focus on weather conditions, because the work can be done in early December. Why put off until spring what you can do already? With the onset of spring, you will be able to observe the plantings and their growth, and not be busy preparing the beds.
Advantages of pre-winter sowing
Not only saving time is a plus. Cabbage from winter sowing is more resistant to pests, and the fruits themselves will develop juicy, have increased immunity to diseases.
What you need to know
A mid- or late-ripening variety is suitable for winter sowing. Cabbage does not grow well on acidic soils, so the bed must be prepared in advance and deacidified, fertilized.
The soil must be light and high so that the seeds do not germinate prematurely. The furrows are made 5 cm deep, the distance between the rows is 20 cm. The sown seeds must be covered with soil, which by this point should have been prepared in the fall and kept warm. The seeds are not covered with frozen soil.
Seeds should be sown when it gets cold. The recommended temperature is 0 degrees. The beds with seeds must be covered. You can use spruce branches, leaves or spunbond. Cabbage sown before winter will yield a harvest 3 weeks earlier than spring plantings.
