Bananas are usually imported to Ukraine and other countries unripe. In stores, special storage conditions are created for them, which prevent early spoilage. But very often literally after a couple of days they turn black. In order to understand whether it is possible to somehow slow down this process, you need to know why it happens and which bananas are better to buy.
Which bananas to choose in the store
The uniformly yellow fruit with a greenish stalk is best eaten within the first day after purchase. But a banana with a green skin, if it was properly transported and stored, will be able to ripen naturally at home. However, if there are dark spots on the skin, the fruit will not be stored for a long time. It is better to refuse to buy such bananas or eat them right away, before they start to turn black.
How to store bananas at home so that they do not turn black
There are a number of simple rules that should be followed:
- avoid plastic bags, as condensation accumulates in them, which leads to accelerated spoilage and rotting of fruits. It is better to store bananas in an open form or in a sealed paper bag. A good option will be a wooden box or a cardboard box;
- keep bananas as far as possible from ripe or ripening fruits – apples, pears. They emit ethylene, which helps accelerate the ripening of bananas – – and they will begin to darken very quickly;
- it is also important to avoid direct sunlight, otherwise bananas will quickly turn black
- for the same reason, it is advisable to store bananas away from heat sources;
- it is not recommended to keep bananas in the refrigerator, as their appearance will also be affected by low temperatures. If such a need does arise, it is advisable to choose a “warm” place, for example, on the door or the bottom shelf.
