Dana Stern, MD, a dermatologist who specializes in nail health, recommends taking a break from nail extensions and cutting your nails as short as possible to start with, so they're less likely to break. The expert also gave a number of simple tips that will help make nails stronger.
Wear gloves when working with water
As Stern explains, when the nail absorbs water, the load on its cells increases greatly. This can lead to exfoliation, breakage, make nails weaker and more fragile. She advises wearing gloves when washing dishes, wet cleaning and similar activities – this simple habit will help strengthen your nails.
Use glass nail files
Emery files leave microscopic holes and cracks at the tip of the nail, leading to peeling and cracking. Glass files leave the nail edges flat, Stern points out.
Choose an acetone-free nail polish remover
“Acetone tends to dry out the nail and can increase brittleness,” – says the specialist. She recommends using a nail polish remover that contains conditioning additives or vegetable oils that add moisture to the nails.
Avoid products with formaldehyde
It may be present in varnishes or nail strengtheners. “Formaldehyde initially strengthens the nail, but eventually it becomes brittle,” explains Stern. Also, this substance can cause serious allergic reactions.
Moisturize and nourish nails
Oils, serums, creams and other care products rich in phospholipids – a great way to strengthen nails at home. These substances are found in large quantities, for example, in sunflower oil.
