How to use tomato tops in the garden
1
Few summer residents know that tomato tops have practical applications. Therefore, it is worth figuring out how to use and prepare them correctly.
Tops from pests
Tomato tops contain solanine, which is a poisonous compound. Therefore, this property can be used to combat:
- Aphids.
- Colorado red beetle.
- Ants.
- Firefly.
- Carrot fly.
- Spider mite.
- Cruciferous flea.
- Fruit eater and other pests.
To spray the area against pests, you can prepare an infusion or decoction. In the preparation process, you can use:
• leaves;
• stems;
• stepsons.
To prepare the solution, you need to take 1 kg of tops and grind it. Then all this is poured with warm water for 5 hours. At the end, it is advisable to add 40 g of laundry soap, which will enhance the adhesive effect.
To prepare the broth, you need to pour 4 kg of tops with 10 liters of water. Then you should boil over low heat for 30 minutes. After that, the solution must be filtered and diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 4. Laundry soap should also be added. The broth is obtained significantly more, and many also say that it has better efficiency.
As a fertilizer
The most interesting thing is that tomato tops are also suitable as fertilizers for many plants. The easiest way to use them is to chop them and add them to the soil in the fall. The result of such fertilizer will definitely surprise you, although at first glance it does not seem effective.
You can also make liquid green fertilizer. To do this, fill the container 2/3 of the way with tops, pouring everything on top with water.
It is important that there is a small influx of air, which will ensure gas exchange. The grass will ferment for about 10 days, then it can be diluted with water in the ratio: one liter of solution per 10 liters of water. The resulting solution can be watered under the root of the plants.
With this “brew” you can not only fertilize plants, but also carry out preventive treatment. Of course, it is unlikely to get rid of all pests on the site, but the positive effect will be noticeable.
How else can you use it?
If you do not want to make different solutions and deal with treatment, you can always do it easier. For example, tomato tops repel mice. Therefore, they can be laid out near shrubs and buildings where mice often visit.
The tops can also become a material for mulching. It can be laid out in the aisles. The most interesting thing is that thanks to this use, the tops will repel pests and act as mulch.
Some summer residents use the tops to get rid of the smell in the outdoor toilet. It absorbs ammonia well, neutralizing unpleasant odors. Of course, these plants should be added to the toilet every day.
