In the Russian language, the word “prosperity” means several concepts. It can be a calm and happy state of existence, life in abundance. When greeting, this word is used to wish a person family or material happiness.
The word “prosperity” consists of two Russian roots: “good” and “get”. There is no direct analogue of such a phrase in the Ukrainian language. Instead, the Ukrainian language has several synonyms for the word “well-being”:
- Dobrobut: the most frequent Ukrainian counterpart. It means material security, prosperity, happy life.
- Prosperity – absence of need, material security; wealth, a large amount of something.
- Okay:this word has a broader meaning and can mean both physical health and general well-being.
- Happiness: this variant is most often used to describe an emotional state, but can also mean a general well-being.
Examples of use:
Instead of “social well-being” it is better to say “social well-being”. Instead of “emotional well-being” it is better to say “emotional well-being”. You can wish someone “prosperity”, “prosperity” or “happiness”.
As for the expression “to get somewhere safely”, the dictionary suggests replacing the word “safely” with such equivalents as “okay, well, happily, safely”. Example: “happily moved to a safe place”, “get safely”.
And the expression “will end well” or “will end badly” – “get out well”, “get out bad”.
Although the word “prosperity” is in the Ukrainian language, it is borrowed from Russian. To express this concept in the Ukrainian language, there are more natural and apt words, such as “well-being”, “prosperity”, “goodness” and “happiness”.
