Being in a relationship is believed to mean being happy. But what does science show?
A few decades ago, people often sought love only because they were afraid of public disapproval. But the pressure of society in this regard gradually decreased. Now it is considered quite normal to be single or live with someone without getting married.
More than 40% of the Canadian population is single. And the number of those living alone is growing.
There are several stereotypes associated with loneliness. For example, the statement that lonely people are usually unhappy and sick. This is not true at all. As a rule, such people are more sociable, active and independent.
Here are the benefits of being single.
Increased social connections.Single people often have stronger and broader social connections. People without a partner are often more socially active. Marriage can be closed in this regard. When you already have a partner, you are less likely to seek support or useful social interaction.
Improving physical fitness. Single people are more likely to think about their physical health and improve it. It is known that single people spend more time on physical exercise than married people. Therefore, on average, they have a lower body mass index. They also have a more stable level of general well-being, self-esteem, and life satisfaction compared to couples.
Independence. Single people are usually self-sufficient. They have more chances for personal and psychological growth and development.
But the single lifestyle has several disadvantages. It is known, for example, that married people live longer. In addition, scientific studies show that those who have poor physical, psychological, and emotional health are less likely to marry and more likely to die early.
Single people also eat worse than married people. And people who are married have better financial conditions and are less prone to risky behavior such as alcohol abuse.
At the same time, it is important to note that not all romantic relationships bring pleasure and benefits. When separated, people can experience severe stress, and this can negatively affect their health.
In general, studies prove one thing: our social connections are very important. Physical and mental health, behavior, and risk of death depend on the quantity and quality of relationships (whether friendly, romantic, or otherwise) with other people.
