In Russia, against the backdrop of the Kremlin's war against Ukraine, there is a stratification of society.
He noted that Russia has enough money to finance a significant part of its population.
“What's more, we know that thanks to the fact that today many residents of this country die at the front and, accordingly, their families receive some additional income, these notorious “Ladies” and everything else, here, perhaps, even an increase in the welfare of a certain part of the population will occur for this reason. And accordingly, the increase in stratification. Because the money has to be taken from somewhere in order to finance the “operation”. Recently, there was information that there is a promise to pay more money to those who enlist in the Russian army, go to war, and, accordingly, this money also needs to be taken from somewhere. This is such a stratification, when one part can receive more, and the other part is deprived of these resources — this is a typical situation for war,” the economist said.
He emphasized that the general well-being of the Russian Federation cannot improve, because a very large share of the national product is actually burned by waging war.
He regretfully drew attention to the fact that in Russia military production is expanding, for which resources are needed. At the same time, the economy can produce a certain limited amount, for example, steel, polymers, equipment for equipping military equipment.
“And all this has to come from somewhere. Therefore, it is clear that in other sectors there may be a lack of similar things, similar components, goods, raw materials. Moreover, because of Russian sanctions, it is much more difficult to buy it on foreign markets. With limited resources, spillovers can cause a number of industries to increase markedly, grow markedly, while others stagnate. I think we can see on the general indicator of industry that this is a game not only with zero, but even with a negative sum, when the economy as a whole suffers from this,” said the economist.
Previously, the economic columnist V Yacheslav Shiryaev stated that in Russia they are forced to regularly increase payments for contract workers in order to support their participation in the war. However, inflation quickly “eats” this money, and its real value falls rapidly.
