“Interest” or “percentage”? How to speak correctly and without slur

In the Ukrainian colloquial language, Russianisms, Surzhika words or already twisted words of foreign origin are often found.

However, now Ukrainians have begun to pay more attention to the purity of their speech and are trying to get rid of such verbal parasites.

“Percentages” or “percentages”?

According to Szymanskyi, both words can be used in a conversation. – and “percentages” and “percentages”. However, only one of them is of Ukrainian origin.

“Percent” is a specific word of Ukrainian origin, and “percent” is of foreign origin. But you can use the word “percent”, it will not be a mistake. Therefore, choose the option you like,” the linguist explained.

“Percentage”– a hundredth part of a certain number, which is taken as a whole, as a unit. A part of something. Percent.

And the word “percent” passed from Italian through German to Eastern Slavic languages. Both lexemes were actively used in Western Ukraine in the last century. In Soviet times, the word “percentage” was considered almost nationalistic and mercilessly removed from texts.

Today, the word “percentage” is used quite infrequently, although it is not prohibited. This is a normal synonym, and as a term it is needed in the scientific and technical sphere.
