Anemia is treated with iron tablets and eating iron-rich foods. The Department of Health and Social Care advises that most people can get all the iron they need by eating a varied and balanced diet.
People can develop anemia because they don't get enough iron from food or they have conditions that limit the amount of iron their body can absorb.” The organization explains that “symptoms of iron deficiency anemia appear later. At first, you may have low iron and feel fine, or you may have symptoms so mild that you don't notice them.
Untreated anemia can make you feel tired and weak.
You may notice pale skin and cold hands and feet. anemia can make you feel dizzy.
Sometimes it can cause chest pain, fast heart rate and shortness of breath. Iron deficiency can cause you to have unusual cravings for non-food items such as ice, dirt or paper.
Other common symptoms you may have include:
- Your nails are brittle or spoon-shaped. This condition is called koilonychia. Your nails look concave like spoons instead of growing flat
- You have cracks at the corners of your mouth
- Your tongue hurts or feels inflamed
< p>It can take three to six weeks before iron supplements begin to build iron stores.
