Is it possible to use the word hello in Ukrainian: explanation of linguists
0
Ukrainian linguists explained whether it is correct to use the word “hello” in the Ukrainian language, or it is better to replace it with other expressions.
As indicated on the Ukrainian Language portal, this word is found in literary works from the 19th to the 21st centuries, reflecting the entire history of the modern Ukrainian language. Although “hello” may resemble a Russian word, it should not be considered a Russianism. For example, it is used by the following famous writers:
- Panas Myrnyi in his novel “Prostitute” writes: “Hello! Are you walking? – and Protsenko appeared in front of her, as if from the ground. She was silent”;
- Marko Kropyvnytskyi in the work “Give your heart free will lead you into captivity” notes: “Semen: Well, your grandmother, will they still say hello?”;
- Aleksandr Dovzhenko in the film “Zemlya” he describes: “Hello, grandfather – sonorous children's voices rang out from behind the viburnum bush near the nearby grave”;
- Vsevolod Nestayko in the work “The Fairy Tale Adventures of Hrailik” writes: “Hello, grandmother! – cried Grailik, running up to her.”
So, the word “hello” is acceptable in works of art and everyday speech. However, linguists advise using other expressions in official texts, since this word is not found in the “Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language” edited by B. D. Grinchenko and other authoritative sources.
