In stores, apples are often greasy and sticky to the touch. But does this mean that they are spoiled or of poor quality?
All apples contain natural wax. It is located directly on the surface of the apples, that is, on their skin. The amount of this wax may vary depending on the variety, and it is needed to protect the fruits from pests and retain moisture.
In a hot climate, there is less wax on apples than in cold weather. Therefore, in cold weather, the skin of apples becomes more shiny and oily. And it can be the same for fresh fruits. Natural wax does not harm human health and does not indicate that the product is of poor quality.
In addition, fruits are rubbed with synthetic wax so that during long transportation they retain their fresh appearance longer. But all synthetic waxes also undergo special tests and are safe.
At the same time, the surface of apples from the store may still contain pesticides or some other chemicals that were used during fruit cultivation. Therefore, before eating store apples, wash them thoroughly.
