Is it true that the risk of stroke decreases with age?

In the study, scientists found out how the presence or absence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus affect the risk of stroke with age. It turned out that sometimes this risk can decrease.

The new study involved 28,235 people. They had never had a stroke before the start of the study. Scientists followed them for an average of 11 years.

During the study, scientists recorded 1,405 strokes over 276,074 person-years. Person-years are the number of people participating in the study, as well as the amount of time each participant spent in the experiment.

Then, all participants were divided into three age groups. The youngest group included those aged 45-59, the middle group included those aged 60-70, and the oldest group included people aged 74+.

In the younger group, participants with diabetes had about twice the risk of stroke as their peers without diabetes. And in people with diabetes in the older age group, this risk was 30% higher compared to people of the same age who did not have diabetes.

In addition, experts found that people with high blood pressure in the younger group were 80% more likely to have a stroke than people of the same age without hypertension. In the older group, this risk was reduced to 50%.

It was also found that black people in the younger group had a higher risk of stroke compared to white participants in the same group. However, this difference became smaller in the older age group.
