It became known about an unpleasant disease caused by vitamin B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 is important for cellular metabolism and the nervous system, as it helps nerve fibers to be covered with an insulating substance – myelin. The lack of this vitamin is more pronounced in old age. Therefore, at a young age, symptoms of B12 deficiency can be missed, mistaking them for neuralgia or fatigue.
A study published by a group of scientists shows that long-term B12 deficiency causes neuropathy – damage to individual nerves caused by intoxication or metabolic disorders.
One of the patients from Cameroon, who was observed by the researchers, complained of burning pain in the upper part of the body, paresthesia and numbness of the arms and legs, which lasted for five years. Just one month after taking vitamin B12 supplements, these symptoms disappeared.
Vitamin B12 is found in beef, pork, and chicken liver, meat, fish, milk, and fermented dairy products. However, more than half of the vitamin that comes with food is not absorbed in the intestines. Intramuscular injections are used to treat acute forms of B12 deficiency.
