For many years, scientists tried to explain why too cold food causes pain in the teeth even though they are covered with protective enamel. Recently, they managed to reveal the real reason for this. It turned out that odontoblast cells react painfully to low temperatures.
These cells share a hard layer of enamel and a soft inner pulp. It is noteworthy that the largest number of odontoblasts was noted in people with diseased teeth.
Researchers also found that with the help of clove oil, which is actively used to relieve toothache in folk medicine, it is really possible to reduce painful sensations, as it contains the substance eugenol.
It can temporarily block odontoblast cells. Scientists are now thinking about creating a special chewing gum that contained eugenol and blocked toothache.
