It's proven: insomnia can be deadly

Back in the 20th century, scientists discovered a disease whose main symptom is insomnia. And people die very quickly from this disease.
Lack of sleep has a bad effect on human health, and this has been known for a long time. This is due to the fact that during sleep the body is restored, and in children emotional and intellectual development occurs at the same time.
With prolonged insomnia, the health consequences can be very serious. A person in this case may develop diabetes, obesity, heart disease, dementia.
Among the causes of insomnia, experts highlight severe stress, alcohol use, illness, shift work, poor sleep hygiene, sleep apnea.
Insomnia is also most often associated with hormonal changes and a decrease in melatonin in the body.
Insomnia can be cured in most cases, but not always. In 1979, an Italian doctor discovered a disease called “fatal familial insomnia.” People with this disease simply die from chronic sleep deprivation, and there is still no cure for it.
Fatal familial insomnia occurs, although very rarely. It is associated with a mutation in the PRNP gene and affects the area of the brain that is associated with sleep regulation, the thalamus. This type of insomnia occurs suddenly and progresses rapidly. The person dies between 7 and 36 months after the first signs of the disease appear.
