Just one cup of coffee a day can reduce the risk of a dangerous kidney condition

Drinking even one cup of coffee a day can reduce the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI). This is the conclusion reached by researchers from Johns Hopkins University (USA).
In particular, their study showed that people who drank any amount of coffee every day had a 15% lower risk of developing PN than those who did not drink this drink at all, StudyFinds writes. Even taking into account additional co-morbidities (high blood pressure, diabetes, reduced kidney function), coffee drinkers had an 11% lower risk of developing AKI.
Experts noted that the greatest reduction in risk was by 22-23% – was among those who usually consume from two to three cups daily. But, scientists point out, one cup of coffee a day is enough to reduce it.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a pathological condition that develops as a result of direct acute exposure to various damaging factors and is characterized by the rapid, often within a few hours, development of signs of kidney damage or dysfunction of varying severity. As experts note, the risk of APN is higher in patients whose kidneys are weaker due to medical and surgical stress or complications.
“We suspect that the reason for the effect of coffee on the risk of APN may be that or its biologically active compounds in in combination with caffeine, or caffeine itself improves perfusion (passage of fluid, in particular blood, through the tissue – ed.) and the use of oxygen in the kidneys,” explains one of the authors of the study, MD, director of the department of nephrology at Johns Hopkins University, Chirag Parikh.
He suggests that perhaps caffeine helps the kidneys maintain a more stable system. Regarding why and how exactly coffee protects the kidneys, the authors of the study emphasize that additional research is needed to answer these questions.
