The risk of dementia is related to a number of factors. It is age, genetics and lifestyle. And if the first two cannot be controlled, the third can easily change.
In particular, there is one feature of personal hygiene that can seriously affect the risk of dementia. And in particular, increase it by 65%.
According to the study, the lack of daily tooth brushing seriously increases the chances of developing dementia.
Scientists led by Dr. Annalia Paganini Hill, a biostatistician and epidemiologist at the medical school of the University of California analyzed the data of 5,500 elderly people.
The observation lasted for 18 years. As a result, it was found that people who did not brush their teeth every day had a 22-65 percent higher risk of dementia than those who brushed their teeth three times a day. When the researchers divided the participants by gender, they found something surprising.
“Men with insufficient natural masticatory function who did not wear dentures had a 91 percent higher risk of dementia than men with adequate masticatory function.” the scientists note.
The team defined “natural chewing function” as having 10 or more upper teeth and six or more lower teeth. This means that the risk of dementia seriously increases in people who suffer from deep caries.
