Kyiv in the 1930s and 50s – how Shevchenko Boulevard once looked

Taras Shevchenko Boulevard used to have a different appearance. It used to be called Bibikov Boulevard, in honor of Kyiv military governor D. G. Bibikov. But in 1919 it was renamed Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.
The photo shows Shevchenko Boulevard in the 1930s and 1950s.
The boulevard as a city street was laid in 1830, it was first mentioned in 1834 as Boulevard Highway. It was actually laid in the early 1840s according to the general plan of Kyiv in 1837.
During the Bolshevik renaming of the city's streets in 1919, the street was named Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, in honor of the Ukrainian poet, writer, artist T. G. Shevchenko.
In 1985, a part of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard between Peremogy Square and the Pavitroflotskiy Overpass was joined to the former Brest-Litovsk Avenue, which was then renamed Victory Avenue.
Taras Shevchenko Boulevard — the only city street renamed by the Bolsheviks in 1919 that did not change its name after the independence of Ukraine.
