Life under the Tsar and the Bolsheviks: color photos of Kyiv in the 1910s-1930s
The unique photo was published on the page of the community “Native Kyivan's Club” in the social Facebook network.
“Kyiv. He was like that in the 10s and 30s of the 20th century. Watch and be amazed,” the message reads.
The photo also shows what the main square of Ukraine looked like after the Second World War. In 1935, the square was renamed in honor of one of the Soviet party leaders – Mykhailo Kalinin.
During the Nazi occupation of 1941-1943, Khreschatyk and part of the square turned into solid ruins.
Retreating Soviet troops mined houses of the main street, the mines went off on September 24, 1941, a gigantic fire broke out that lasted for several days and destroyed almost the entire odd-numbered side and quarters of the even-numbered side from the central square to the Central Shopping Center.
