Little by little, but regularly: a way to improve memory has been named

Regular short-term exercise improves brain functions such as learning ability and memory.

Scientists from the Oregon Health & Science University in the USA have found that physical activity enhances the work of a gene whose activity affects the ability to remember.

Researchers-neurobiologists assessed the work of the central nervous system of laboratory mice while they were placed in running wheels. The rodents ran several kilometers in two hours.

It turned out that physical activity, equivalent to four thousand human steps, contributed to the formation of synapses in the brains of animals – contacts between nerve cells. The formation of connections between neurons is of key importance in the formation of memory. Short-term exercises also activate the Mtss1L gene, as a result of which dendritic spines appear on the surface of neurons – membrane outgrowths that form synaptic connections.
