Long live: the secret of the genes of long-lived people has been discovered by scientists

Scientists from the University of Bologna conducted a study, to understand why some people can live more than 100 years. They studied the genetics of 81 long-lived people from all over the Italian peninsula.

According to scientists, the mechanism of aging is a common risk factor for chronic diseases in all people. That is why, together with the genes of the elderly, the researchers studied the materials of young and healthy Italians.

Comparing blood samples from older people aged 105 and over and younger people aged up to 68, they analyzed data from another study involving 333 Italians aged from hundred years old and 358 people in their 60s.

It turned out that the groups of long-lived people have five changes in their genome related to the COA1 and STK17A genes. “Our results suggest that DNA repair mechanisms and a low mutation load in specific genes are two central mechanisms that have protected people who have reached the limit of longevity from age-related diseases,” shared author Claudio Franceschi, professor emeritus of immunology at the University of Bologna.< /p>
