Compared to those who don't drink coffee at all, adults who drink a moderate amount of unsweetened soft drink or sweetened coffee every day are less likely to die – at least within seven years. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from the Southern Medical University in Guangzhou (China).
They published the results of the cohort study in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. During it, specialists used the data of the questionnaire of the biobank of Great Britain with the participation of 171,000 people without known heart diseases or oncological diseases. They were asked questions, in particular, about food. The task of the scientists was to evaluate the relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened, artificial sweeteners and unsweetened coffee with mortality from all and specific causes. amount of unsweetened coffee, the probability of dying was 16-21% lower than in those who did not drink this drink in principle. And the participants who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee with sugar every day had a 29-31% lower chance of dying than those who did not drink coffee.
At the same time, for those , who used artificial sweeteners, the data were inconclusive. Another important point is the amount of sugar. The researchers note that adults who drank sweetened coffee added only about one teaspoon of sugar per cup, on average. This is much less than the sugar content of many popular coffee drinks in restaurants and cafes.
