Today, scientists and doctors single out one diet in particular for its benefits for longevity – the Mediterranean diet. It is followed by the inhabitants of countries located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, including France, Greece, Italy and Spain.
Depending on the region, the Mediterranean diet differs in the products that make up the basis of its diet. However, as a rule, it includes a large number of vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals, fish, as well as olive oil.
The consumption of dairy and meat products is minimized. As the Express reports, numerous studies have found a link between the Mediterranean diet and increased life expectancy.
For example, a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) looked at the improved Mediterranean diet and its effect on longevity. According to the authors of the work, it was about a diet in which unsaturated fats were replaced by monounsaturated fats. Foods such as avocados, olives, olive oil, rapeseed oil and nuts contain the most of them.
In the course of the work, data on the health of 74,607 men and women aged 60 and older were studied. None of them had heart problems, strokes or cancer at the time of the study. Participants represented nine European countries. As a result, it was found that the Mediterranean diet, adapted for residents of all of Europe, is associated with a reduced risk of early death.
