Maintaining an active lifestyle protects against age-related degradation

New data scientists say that maintaining an active lifestyle provides the elderly with prevention of negative age-related processes, depression.

Researchers representing the University of Pittsburgh stated that the ability to remain active and interest in life protect the elderly from age-related degradation , cognitive decline. This conclusion was made after observing a group of 1,800 people aged (on average) 73 years old.

“Old people who lead an active lifestyle – get up early, do sports, meet with friends, play with grandchildren, etc., have a sharper mind and are less likely to develop depression,” JAMA Psychiatry magazine quotes scientists.

According to the lead author of the study, Steven Smagula, activity is the basis of good health. Lying in bed for a long time contributes to the continuation of diseases, severe symptoms, suffering.

Observations showed that participants who had the habit of getting up early and being active for 15 hours every day performed best on tests that require good memory and attention . In addition, these people were less prone to depression.

“People who do not have a stable daily routine, often sit at home, hardly exercise and overeat, had the highest rates of cognitive impairment and often suffered from problems with mental health”, the authors of the work informed.
