Man spent six months in a coma, and when he opened his eyes, he received a bill for $2.5 million

A man who woke up from a six-month coma following a traumatic brain injury was greeted with a bill for $ 2.5 million (102 million hryvnias).

This is reported by the Mirror.

John Pennington, who lives in Las Vegas, USA, was 30 years old when he received traumatic brain injury, collapsed lung, and other complications after a car accident in which he was a passenger.

But after a six-month coma, he miraculously woke up, shocking the nurse who cared for him. Although he remembers nothing from his deep sleep, he does remember his first thoughts. He said on Reddit: “I woke up thinking it was time to go to work, but for some reason I found myself tied to a hospital bed. When I made eye contact with the nurse and asked if I could use the bathroom, she burst into tears and ran out of the room – only to return a few minutes later to apologize and explain that I had been in a coma for the last six months due to a very severe brain injury.”

Soon after that, he was presented with a hospital bill for 2.5 million dollars – and this does not include two courses of rehabilitation in the Program enriching the Nevada community. Wanting to talk about what it's like to be in a coma, John took to social media for users to ask him questions.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, one user asked: “Have you undergone any profound personal changes?” To which he received the following response: “I don’t think I underwent any personal changes, except for the fact that I went through this whole experience and the emotional and psychological impact it had on me.”

Another user asked, “What world event that happened while you were in a coma shocked you the most when you found out about it?” Tragically, he says he woke up wondering where his father was—and for three weeks, no one could give him a straight answer. He said, “It was hard to feel like I had upset him, or that he couldn’t handle seeing me like this. My sister told me four weeks after I woke up that our father had killed himself. He couldn’t handle what was happening and killed himself. That guilt haunted me throughout my recovery. I learned a little more about suicide, and it helped me finally forgive myself. Was there any reason to blame myself? No. Some drunk guy driving his dad’s BMW with no headlights on crashed into my friend and me, causing a traumatic brain injury, but I couldn’t shake that feeling for a while.”

In an updated post, John said he initially set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical expenses, but since that “went nowhere,” his lawyer stepped in to help cover the costs. He added, “My lawyer did a great job getting everything paid for. I was relieved when he told me it worked out. I didn’t get rich, but considering how much I owed, yes, I did.”
