Most people don't even know what words Ukrainian writers invented.

The language is constantly developing and updating. Researchers have concluded that the Ukrainian language is actually richer than previously thought. And although the Great Explanatory Dictionary currently records 250 thousand words, in practice the volume can reach a million.
Author's neologisms are words invented and used by writers in their work. There were situations when writers lacked the linguistic means to convey an image in their work. Over time, such words “penetrated” into everyday speech and became commonly used.
Literary neologisms began to appear actively in the 19th century. Unofficially, they were often called “coined words.” Writers created new words, guided by the basic principles of language, without violating the laws of word formation, so that neologisms were apt, appropriate, and organic.
The history of new Ukrainian literature began with Ivan Kotlyarevsky and his “Aeneid.” He introduced the words “frenzied,” “primita,” “raztovkty,” “ugamuvatysya.”
Taras Shevchenko is considered the author of the words “vognyany,” “fortet,” “destroy,” “morduvatysya,” “pochimchykuvaty,” “preface,” and “epislyamova.”
Mykhailo Starytskyi is a Ukrainian writer, poet, playwright, novelist, theater and cultural figure. It was Starytskyi who first used the word “dream” in its modern sense. Then there was only the verb “to dream”, which meant “to look into the distance”.
Starytskyi introduced the following words into the language:
- incurable;
- indifference;
- darkness;
- attractive;
- powerful;
- premature.
Ivan Frankofirst used the following lexemes:
- factor;
- immovable;
- unstoppable;
- hole;
- pretext;
- wonderful;
- glimpse;
- progress;
- directly;
- evidence;
- ghost.
Panteleimon Kulish first used the words “attract”, “flock”, “criminal”, “unconscious”, “humility”, “service”, “feeling”, “equality” in his works.
Lesia Ukrainka is considered the author of the melodious words “spring”, “ray”, “irrefutable”.
Linguists have studied that Marko Vovchok is the author of the words: “handsome”, “light-hearted”, “intention”, “question”, “stream”, and Leonid Glibov introduced the verbs “mutter” and “turn yellow”.
“Worldview”, “relationship”, “obstacle”, “flower garden”, “exclamation”, “courage” – these lexemes were first used in his stories and novels by Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky.
Thanks to the poetry of Pavel Tychyna, the language was enriched with the words “bystrozir”, “akorditsya”, “vesnity”, “vikovichchya”, “dribrtiny”.
