Muscle twitching signals a magnesium deficiency – the best way to replenish reserves

According to the doctor, one of the “common” causes of muscle twitching is a lack of magnesium in the body.
Many of us have experienced this – lying in bed or sitting on the sofa at the end of the day, when some part your body begins to twitch involuntarily. Fortunately, it's not painful and usually doesn't last long. But why does it happen and can it be prevented?
To prevent muscle twitching or cramps if low magnesium is the cause, she recommended:
- Eat more leafy greens vegetables and whole grains
- Using magnesium salts in the bath
- Take a magnesium supplement in the evening
Other foods naturally rich in magnesium include:
- Dark chocolate
- Avocado
- Nuts and legumes
- Tofu
- Seeds
- Some fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and halibut
- Bananas
Magnesium is needed by the body to convert the food we eat into energy and also to provide the normal functioning of the parathyroid glands, which produce hormones important for bone health.
You should be able to get all the magnesium you need by eating a balanced diet. Men need about 300 mg of magnesium, and women about 270 mg. However, if you need to take a magnesium supplement to boost your levels, no more than 400 mg per day is recommended.
