The study showed that four foods three times increase the risk of worsening of the condition when excluded from any diet.
Dementia is characterized by a gradual deterioration of mental abilities, which endangers the independence of patients. No medicine can reverse the disease, but growing evidence suggests that diet can help prevent it. Studies of the relationship between food and risk factors for the development of dementia have so far revealed many “antidotes”.
A study conducted by the American Academy of Neurology found that those who followed a diet low in fruits, vegetables, beans and tea had three times the risk of developing dementia. For the randomized study, the researchers recruited a total of 1,059 people who were followed for an average of 3.05 years. Dietary intake was monitored using a set of questionnaires standardized to represent normative diets in 11 different countries.
Inflammatory scores were obtained using the inflammatory index, which typically ranges from -8.87 to 7.98. High inflammatory indices were found in people whose diets included fewer servings of fruits, vegetables, beans, tea or coffee.
The team found that people who followed the least anti-inflammatory diet were three times more likely to develop dementia .
The author of the study is Nikolaos Skarmeas from the National University of Athens. Kapodistrias in Greece said:
“You may have some potential nutritional tools in your home to help fight inflammation that can contribute to brain aging. other studies have confirmed that polyphenols and anthocyanins found in fruits, vegetables and tea are key to preventing dementia.”
