Heart failure affects on average more than 26 million people. According to new data, the cause of the disease may be sleep problems. Researchers conducted an experiment that confirmed this hypothesis.
The results of the study were published in the flagship journal of the American Heart Association. A relationship between healthy sleep and heart failure has been found. The study included data on 408,802 UK biobank participants aged 37 to 73. They were followed for 10 years, as a result of which scientists managed to register 5,221 cases of the disease.
The data confirmed that adults with the healthiest sleep patterns had a 42% lower risk of developing heart failure. He means getting up in the morning, sleeping for seven to eight hours a day, no insomnia, snoring or excessive daytime sleepiness.
This observational study studied the quality of sleep according to the main indicators. Data on sleep behavior were collected using touch screen questionnaires. Lu Qi, professor of epidemiology and director of the obesity research center at Tulane University in New Orleans, noted that the results emphasize the importance of improving the overall sleep pattern to prevent heart failure.
