A high level of cholesterol increases the risk of developing dangerous diseases of the cardiovascular system. Elevated blood sugar is no less dangerous because it negatively affects all human organs. And patients with diabetes have an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and vision loss. Experts say that to reduce cholesterol and blood sugar, it is important to include such an element as fiber in the diet.
What is fiber
Dietary fibers or fiber are of two types: soluble and insoluble, and both are really good for health. Sources of soluble fiber are found in oatmeal, legumes, and many fruits. Sources of insoluble fiber, in turn, are whole grains, legumes and most vegetables.
Studies on the benefits of fiber
In one paper, scientists combined the results of 243 studies, dedicated to the impact of dietary fiber on health. After studying data from more than 4,600 people, experts found a strong link between higher dietary fiber intake and better health outcomes, Harvard Medical School experts said.
It turned out that consuming at least 25 grams of dietary fiber per a day is associated with lower weight, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and lower blood pressure. In addition, fiber consumption reduced the risk of mortality from diabetes, heart disease and strokes.
