High cholesterol levels threaten serious problems with the cardiovascular system. However, walnuts not only help control this indicator, but also improve it.
Cholesterol is a molecule that is present in our bloodstream. It is necessary for the creation of healthy cells, but an elevated cholesterol level increases the risk of heart and vascular diseases.
Due to a high level of cholesterol, fatty deposits form in the vessels, blood pressure increases, which increases the risk of serious diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.
More and more scientific evidence indicates the ability of walnuts to protect against heart disease due to their high content of Omega-3 fatty acids. Active consumption of walnuts is associated with low morbidity and mortality from atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and arrhythmia.
Spanish scientists from the Barcelona Clinic recently proved that half a glass of walnuts per day reduces cholesterol levels by approximately 8.5 %, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
This conclusion was made on the basis of a study involving 628 adults, half of whom received walnuts in addition to their diet. This group also had modest decreases in low-density lipoprotein, or “bad” cholesterol, after two years.
