Elevated cholesterol can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease. What we eat affects this indicator. According to experts, one popular dish that is usually eaten for breakfast can effectively reduce it thanks to its beta-glucan content.
High cholesterol can increase the risk of serious heart problems. So it is very important to monitor him. According to experts, one and a half cups of this product, which is usually eaten for breakfast, will reduce cholesterol by 8%.
High cholesterol means you have too much of the waxy substance cholesterol in your body. It can clog your arteries, narrowing them and increasing your risk of heart disease. Fortunately, small changes in lifestyle will correct the situation.
Cholesterol does not always harm the body, it needs a small amount of this substance for normal functioning.
Problems are caused by the so-called “bad” cholesterol.
It increases the risk of serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke, experts from the UK's National Health Service explain.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, one dish that is commonly eaten for breakfast can lower cholesterol. We are talking about oatmeal.
According to experts, just one and a half cups of porridge can lower cholesterol by 5-8%.
Porridge can be prepared from different products – rice, wheat or corn, however, oatmeal contains only, respectively, oatmeal and water or milk.
This is important for lowering cholesterol, as the main benefit of oatmeal is its high fiber content.
Oatmeal has been studied many times for its cholesterol-lowering benefits.
There are several types of fiber. As explained by the Heart UK charity, oatmeal contains so-called beta-glucan.
Just three grams of beta-glucan per day can lower cholesterol levels.
The reason is that this type of fiber is able to form a gel-like substance that binds to cholesterol-containing bile acids in the intestines.
This process helps limit the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines into the blood.
Remember, cholesterol can build up in the blood and damage the arteries, leading to other health problems.
“Your liver has to remove more cholesterol from the blood to make bile. It lowers cholesterol in the blood,” say experts at Heart UK.
That's why experts say something as simple as a cup and a half of oatmeal can lower your cholesterol.
If you don't like porridge, you can always replace it with some other oat-based product.
There are many options: from breakfast cereals to oat biscuits.
Heart UK recommends eating three portions of oat products per day to get three grams of beta-glucan.
“Foods that claim to lower cholesterol contain one or more grams of beta-glucan,” the organization’s experts explain.
