Named an eating habit that can impair cognitive functions

Experts say that breakfast is the most important meal. Scientists have found that skipping breakfast can negatively affect a person's cognitive functions over time.

The findings were based on a study of 3,342 people aged 55 and older. The experts focused on the participants' eating habits: when they ate and which meals they tended to skip. Tests related to cognitive functions were also conducted.

The study notes that the results could be influenced by various factors in the life and health of the participants. However, experts have found that eating on a regular schedule is better for cognitive health. And skipping breakfast, in turn, increases the risk of damage to cognitive functions.

Scientists added that further research is needed to confirm such findings in different populations.

“This study is not surprising and makes sense, mainly because it coincides with similar work suggesting the same results for children, teenagers and young adults who skip meals,” she told Eat This Not That nutritionist Kieran Campbell. In her opinion, skipping breakfast for any reason ends up being completely counterproductive.

As for eating on a consistent schedule, Campbell recommends no more than 4-5 hours without eating during your waking hours. This is done not only to prevent deterioration of cognitive functions and thinking skills, but also to maintain normal blood sugar levels and body weight.
