Type 2 diabetes is a serious chronic disease that develops as a result of the body's inefficient use of insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar). According to the World Health Organization, this type of diabetes occurs mainly against the background of excess body weight and insufficient physical activity.
The risk group includes people with prediabetes – this is an intermediate state, when the body no longer functions normal, but the disorder has not yet reached the disease stage. Due to this, an increased level of sugar in the blood is noted – the main sign of prediabetes.
According to a study published in the Nutrition Journal, people with prediabetes can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by changing their diet. A total of 639 people (50% women, average age 47.3 years) who initially had prediabetes participated in the study.
After almost nine years of observation, it was found that compared to people, who consumed dairy products relatively consistently over a three-year period, those who reduced their intake of dairy products had a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And increasing the consumption of low-fat dairy products by 0.5 servings per day was associated with a lower risk of developing the disease.
The scientists also concluded that those who increased their consumption of low-fat milk and of low-fat yogurt, there was a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And replacing skim milk and yogurt with plain cheese, on the contrary, was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
In conclusion, the scientists noted that skim milk products can play a role in the prevention of the disease in patients with prediabetes.< /p>
