Named for a berry that can protect eye health

One of the main causes of vision loss with age is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A recent study showed that goji berries can protect eye health.

In an experiment, scientists asked 13 healthy people between the ages of 45 and 65 to consume about 30 grams of dried goji berries five times a week for three months Another 14 participants consumed the eye health supplement during the same time period.

When comparing the optical density of the macular pigment in their eyes before and after the study, the experts found positive changes only in the group that ate goji berries.< /p>

According to the scientists, the eye health of the volunteers improved due to two compounds in the berries – lutein and zeaxanthin. They are known to have positive effects on the visual system, including protection against diseases related to VDHP, said lead author Xiang Li.

“These two compounds are like sunscreen for your eyes. The more of them in your retina, the more protection you have,” she added.
