Named one of the main risk factors for the development of liver disease

Liver diseases can develop quite quietly and asymptomatically, slowly killing the organ. Today, the main problem is the so-called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which leads to cirrhosis and liver failure. As a result, in order to save a person's life, a donor organ is needed.

Scientists from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) stated that one of the main risk factors for the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is metabolic syndrome, Express writes. “Metabolic syndrome is a group of signs and diseases associated with obesity,” experts explained.

It includes the following symptoms:

1. Large waist
2. High level of triglycerides in the blood
3. Low level of “good” cholesterol
4. High blood pressure
5. High level of glucose
6. Type 2 diabetes

As doctors from the British Heart Foundation explained, measuring waist circumference is considered one of the main “fat indicators” in the body. For men, the critical indicator is 93 cm, and for women – more than 78 cm.

As for the level of triglycerides in the blood, ideally it should be below 2.3 mmol/l. In addition, do not forget about the control of blood pressure, which should not be higher than 120/80. Indicators below this mark are considered by doctors as a risk of developing heart diseases.
