Life expectancy is affected by diet a person and his eating habits. Scientists have concluded that people who add salt to food at the table are at a higher risk of premature death from any cause.
The study was published in the European Society of Cardiology. More than 501,000 people took part in it. The participants were asked using a questionnaire whether they add salt to their food. The researchers took into account other factors that could affect the results. These include age, gender, race, body mass index, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and diet.
After observing the participants, the study found that compared to those who never or rarely added salt, those , who always added salt to their food, the risk of premature death was 28% higher. Additionally, the study found that participants who always added salt had a lower life expectancy. At the age of 50, women's life expectancy has decreased by a total of 1.5 years. For men, the reduction was 2.28 years.
However, the researchers also found that these risks tended to be slightly reduced in people who consumed the most fruits and vegetables, although these results were not statistically significant. This trend is due to the fact that fruits and vegetables are rich in potassium, which has a protective effect and is associated with a lower risk of premature death, experts explained.
