The best drink to reduce high sugar in the blood of a diabetic is ordinary water, scientists state.
Diabetes (usually type 2 diabetes) results from dysfunction in the way the body processes insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas. The main task of insulin is to regulate the level of sugar in the blood: the hormone distributes it among the cells in order to produce energy, which prevents the accumulation of sugar in the blood and increases its concentration. If the body does not produce enough insulin, or the cells stop responding to it, blood sugar levels begin to rise, and this can have devastating consequences.
Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that plain water is an effective natural remedy for lowering blood sugar. In particular, the journal Diabetes Care published a report on a study that showed that “increasing water intake can prevent or delay the onset of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and subsequent diabetes.”
Scientists found: people who drink more than one liter of water per day, have a 28% lower risk of developing new hyperglycemia than those who drink less than 500 ml of water per day. The researchers concluded that drinking enough water prevents an increase in the level of vasopressin, a hormone whose concentration increases with dehydration, which is considered a risk factor for hyperglycemia and diabetes.
Water is the “perfect drink” for people with diabetes because it does not contain carbohydrates and calories. In addition, diabetics need more fluids when their blood glucose levels are high. In this case, the kidneys activate the removal of excess sugar with urine, and the body loses a lot of moisture at once.
Water does not increase the level of glucose in the blood, so it is useful to drink it when people with diabetes have high sugar levels – it allows wash more blood from glucose.
