As a result, the former teacher turned to the local ataxia center. She was diagnosed there. It turned out that the woman had a condition known as gluten ataxia.
It is noted that this is a fairly common immune response to gluten. The symptoms are similar to those of a stroke. Thus, there is difficulty in speech and impaired motor functions, possible paralysis.
Professor Marios Hadzhivassiliou advised the woman to follow a gluten-free diet. As the woman shared, her well-being immediately improved. In particular, for the first time in a long time, she was able to walk without canes.
At the same time, the woman's speech will still remain slurred, as the cells of the cerebellum are already severely damaged. Hadjivassiliou explained that diet only helps in 80% of cases. In others, it is powerless, as many changes are irreversible.
“Gluten ataxia destroys the cells of the cerebellum: the part of the brain responsible for movement, and if this continues for a long period, the symptoms will become irreversible,” said the professor.
