In 2024, this memorable date falls on August 29.
What is it for the holiday: Beheading of John the Baptist
On this day, the church remembers the death of John the Forerunner, who baptized Jesus Christ, and his transition to the eternal kingdom. According to biblical legends, the Forerunner was thrown into prison on the orders of King Herod's wife Herodias, who fiercely hated the saint.
When Herodias' daughter Salome satisfied the king's desire with her exotic dance during a banquet, he promised her to fulfill any desire of the girl. After consulting with her mother, Salomia asked to bring her the head of John the Baptist on a plate. Herod, without thinking for a long time, ordered to behead the saint.
When the disciples heard about the death of their teacher, they took the body and buried him with all honors. But Salomia was punished by the Lord. One day she was walking along a frozen river, suddenly the ice under her cracked and the girl fell into the icy water. Her head was cut off with a sharp piece, and the body was never found.
