Nighttime trips to the bathroom could indicate heart disease, cancer, and diabetes

The need to urinate at night can be explained by heart failure and high blood sugar levels.

According to the NHS (UK National Health Service), in most cases, nighttime trips to the toilet are associated with the fact that a person drank a lot of fluids in the evening or shortly before bedtime.

But if you have to wake up frequently at night to urinate, it could be nocturia. This condition is associated with a number of medical problems, including diabetes. Experts explain: with diabetes, the blood sugar level increases, and the body begins to produce urine more actively to remove excess fluid. In addition, increased urination is facilitated by thirst, the feeling of which is significantly exacerbated in diabetics.

“High blood sugar also irritates the bladder, forcing you to urinate more often,” states the NHS.

Specialists of the service advise people who wake up at night to go to the toilet to be checked for possible prediabetes or diabetes.

Other symptoms that also indicate this disease are weight loss and muscle mass, itching in intimate areas or frequent episodes of thrush, slow healing of cuts, blurred vision.

Another common cause of nocturia is heart problems. According to urologist Jeffrey Weiss, nighttime awakenings can indicate heart failure. With this disorder, blood circulation becomes less efficient, which causes water accumulation and swelling in the legs. When a person goes to bed, their legs rise, and the fluid coming from them begins to be excreted by the kidneys.

Other signs of heart failure are shortness of breath at rest, increased fatigue and fatigue, dizziness.

Also, nighttime urges to urinate can be associated with a changed prostate condition. Doctors note that in men with age, the prostate gland often begins to grow, putting pressure on the urethra and preventing the bladder from completely emptying, which contributes to more frequent trips to the toilet. Such a change is a completely normal feature of male aging, but frequent urination can also be a sign of prostate cancer.
