No better than smoking: new risk factor for premature death in men named

Doctors have long established a connection between psychological health and life expectancy. Stress can be no less dangerous than smoking or an unhealthy lifestyle.
Happy marriage and longevity
Scientists from Tel Aviv University established an unusual at first glance regularity. It turned out that unhappily married men have a higher risk of premature death.
Israeli doctors analyzed the data of a large study on life expectancy and premature mortality, which began back in 1965. About nine thousand men over the age of 40 took part in it.
Participants of the study, in particular, were asked about how highly they rate their marriage. It turned out that those who gave the lowest score were 69% more likely to die of a stroke compared to happy men. Overall, mortality among unhappy men was 19% higher.
The younger, the worse
Additional analysis showed that this pattern was strongest among men aged up to 50 years. Among them, mortality was 39.4% higher than the average, while among the elderly it was 6.5%. “We discovered, and it's surprising, that men's dissatisfaction with their marriage is a risk factor for premature death on the same order as smoking or lack of sports,” said one of the authors of the study, Shahar Lev-Ari.
