No “Illivychs” and “Illinichys”: how to write and speak Ukrainian correctly
0< /i>
The declension of some Ukrainian names, and even more so the formation of patronymic forms from them, can raise many questions. In particular, many Ukrainians make mistakes with the name Ilya, namely with the form “fatherly”.
How to correctly form the patronymic form of the name Ilya. We place all the dots above “i”, especially since the name begins with this letter.
Patronymic form of Ilya
In Ukrainian there is a fairly easy rule for this case, knowing it will help to avoid possible mistakes.
“Patronymic names are formed with the help of the suffixes -ович, -євич (rarely -ич, -ич) for men and -ивна ( -yivna) for women,” says the spelling.
Therefore, the only correct option remains: Illich and Illivna. All other forms are gross errors. At the same time, when writing the first name or patronymic in official documents, you must use the variant that is indicated in the passport or birth certificate, even if it contradicts the norms of the Ukrainian language. Otherwise, there may be legal consequences.
