Numbness in the hands in a dream may indicate pathology

Many people have experienced numbness in their hands in the morning after waking up. Most often, this is due to an uncomfortable position during sleep. But if your hands have been numb for a long time, you should consult a doctor, a somnologist warned.
The doctor explained that in addition to an uncomfortable position, numbness in the hands during sleep can be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome – compression of the median nerve at the wrist. This ailment is often found in people who work in an office. Mainly, the thumb, index and middle fingers go numb with tunnel syndrome.
People who perform the same movements with their hands during physical exertion at work are also at risk. They can damage the nerve, which will cause pain, numbness and tingling in the hands, especially at night. This condition is called “working hand” syndrome.
Cervical spondylosis is much more dangerous – it is a chronic degenerative disease that affects the intervertebral discs, muscles and tendons. It is diagnosed mainly in elderly people who complain of stiffness in the neck, pain and numbness in the shoulders, arms and fingers.
Blood vessels can also be compressed. This condition is called thoracic outlet syndrome, when blood vessels and nerves in the upper chest are damaged. It can be caused by neck injuries, bad posture, repetitive movements, and an extra (cervical) rib. This syndrome is diagnosed mainly in women.
Peripheral neuropathy – nerve damage – may be found in diabetics, people with internal inflammation, infections, previous injuries, or a hereditary predisposition.
The somnologist advised choosing orthopedic mattresses and pillows for sleep that will effectively support the spine and neck. It is not recommended to put your hands under the pillow and bend your wrists while sleeping. If you like to sleep on your back with your arms stretched out behind your head, it is better to try to keep them close to you so as not to pinch the nerve.
The doctor also recommended doing a small warm-up for your hands and wrists before going to bed.
If you feel numbness in your hands after waking up and during the day, periodically spreading throughout your body, consult a doctor. Muscle weakness, dizziness, pain in the extremities, and poor sleep may signal the development of pathology in the body.
In some cases, the cause of poor health in the morning may be your pillow. This is not a durable item, and sometimes it needs to be updated.
